Separated from the rest of Brooklyn by the BQE and Gowanus Expressways, Red Hook is an industrial neighborhood that is slowly becoming residential. Red Hook is home to popular retailers, including Fairway and IKEA, and a prominent garden community. However, this old industrial waterfront neighborhood did not always embody urban-rural. In the 90s, Red Hook was considered one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the city, plagued by drugs and violent crime. Remnants of Red Hook’s past can still be seen in its derelict buildings, vacant lots and impoverished housing projects. Today, Red Hook is known for its low rents and quiet streets. Residents can be found at the area’s hip bars and restaurants or on the 20-minute ferry to Manhattan. Beautiful views of the southern tip of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty grace the neighborhood’s waterfront. However, inconvenient location and poor subway access still hold Red Hook back from the development rampant in surrounding areas.
