Gravesend

Pronounced GRAVES-end, Gravesend is a residential neighborhood with a wide range of homes available. Gravesend is one of the oldest settlements in Brooklyn and now one of the more expensive neighborhoods in South Brooklyn. The area originally had its start as a resort community, similar to Coney Island. As working-class families started moving in, Gravesend’s real estate transitioned into detached and semidetached houses. More recently, with the growing prominence of a Sephardic Jew community, houses have been increasing in value. Today, Gravesend offers reasonably priced homes as well as expensive mini-mansions. Co-ops tend to be priced above the South Brooklyn average, and rentals are rare. Additionally, the neighborhood has good public transportation and subway access, easing the burden of distance from other boroughs.
