Neigborhoods

Once known for its poverty and crime, Williamsburg has evolved into one of Brooklyn’s most popular neighborhoods. Hip crowds are often found in the area’s numerous art and music venues, bars and restaurants, and boutique retailers. Small ethnic communities, such as Dominicans and Hasidic Jews, are interspersed throughout the neighborhood, adding to the area’s diversity. Old industrial buildings are being converted into residential loft buildings, and rapid development along the waterfront is providing the area with high rises. Growing population and housing stock has brought real estate prices up considerably, making Williamsburg a prime example of gentrification in Brooklyn. However, not all of Williamsburg has developed at the same pace – the east and south borders of the neighborhood still have many empty warehouses and slightly lower rent.
