Mill Basin

A sheltered peninsula in Jamaica Bay, Mill Basin has changed dramatically over the past century. The city created Mill Basin by dredging sand from the bay’s bottom. Semi-detached frame houses and bungalows were built along Mill Basin’s remote streets, and those seeking refuge from the city moved in. Today, Mill Basin has established a separate identity from surrounding neighborhoods, specifically Flatlands, Bergen Beach and what is called “Old Mill Basin” north of Avenue U. Often described as suburban, the area is defined by tree-lined streets, strip malls and good schools. Older houses and empty properties have been razed and flashy mansions have been built in their place. Luxurious waterfront houses with private docks sell for millions of dollars. Numerous swimming pools make up for the neighborhood’s beach-less shores. Easy access to the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway makes up for the lack of subway access. Overall, Mill Basin is an expensive and comfortable place to live. Source: Streeteasy
